in the Master's Program and the combined Bachelor's Program as major and second subject: How long should my internship be? When should I start my internship?
Your internship should last at least seven weeks, i.e. 270 hours and should be attended after your second semester.
You may do your internship in part-time and stretch the time-span accordingly, so you still reach the required hours.
Additionally, one CP (30 hours) is aquired by attending the Internship Colloquium and contributing a presentation.
If possible, please plan your internship for the lecture-free period. Especially if you plan on doing your internship abroad. Please consider your course of studies and consult the Advising Service.
For students enrolled in the Master’s Program Information Science (PO 2018), there is the possibility of replacing the internship with an appropriate Project Module (MP3).
1. How do I get an internship position?
You are in charge of selecting a suitable institution and of applying for your internship position. You may do your internship abroad. Irregularly, but still in frequent intervals, we post internship offerings in the IBI-Info Moodle course.
Before starting your internship, your host institution needs to sign the Praktikumsvereinbarung (Internship Agreement) to confirm that the internship will meet the requirements stated in the Praktikumsrichtlinie (Internship Guidelines).

2. What should my internship tasks look like?

3. Internship Colloquium
After completing your internship, you will enroll in the Internship Colloquium via Agnes. You do not have to attend the Colloquium immediately after your internship, but we recommend a prompt completion of the Module. We usually offer the Colloquium at the beginning and the end of each semester. In the Colloquium you give an appr. 10min. presentation on your internship institution and your work tasks, and how they refer to the contents of your studies. You are welcome to include a valuation of your internship, including if you would recommend the institution to other students in regards to an internship. The Colloquium aims to provide insight to those students who did not pursue an internship yet and your presentation may give them assistance.
4. What else should I take into account?
During your internship you remain a member of the university concerning all your rights and obligations - assuming that you re-registered in time. There is no change in your health insurance status. (However, if you get paid by your internship organization, your status could differ during this period. Please consult your health insurance for further information.)
During the practical training the work regulations of the internship organization are also valid for the student. The are no financial obligations for the internship organization. Transportation and accommodation will be paid by the student. A financial recompensation from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin cannot be provided.
Humboldt-University does not provide their students with any liability insurance. Therefore, we recommend our students to take out a liability insurance policy that also covers internship activities for students, and if necessary, for foreign countries.
5. How can I get credit for internships that I already attended in the past?
If you already attended an internship or worked in a field that is suitable for the internship requirements, you can gain credits for these experiences in place of another internship. For this, you have to fill in the forms Praktikumsanerkennung (which is part of the Internship Guidelines) and still give a presentation of appr. 10min in the course of the Internship Colloquium (see question No. 3).
6. What ist the difference between the forms "Praktikumsnachweis" und "Praktikumsanerkennung"?
Please use the form Praktikumsnachweis if you did a „normal“ internship in the course of your study program. That is, if you do not aim to have an earlier internship or professional experience in the LIS field considered. In the latter case, please use the form Praktikumsanerkennung.

4. What information should be included in the internship report?
For every internship you have to write a report including the following data:
- Personal data (Name, semester);
- Internship organization;
- Internship period;
- Internship supervisor of the host organization;
- Internship program or tasks;
- Structure and function of the internship organization;
- Departments or work fields you got to know (including duration);
- Tasks you dealt with;
- Problems that you detected, open questions;
- Overall evaluation of your internship;
- Date, signature.
The scope of the report should at least be five pages. We recommend to take notes in a logbook during your internship, which will help you write your report. The report must be handed in to the deputy internship supervisor, Dr. Maria Gäde , within two months after the completion of your internship along with the Praktikumsvereinbarung, Praktikumsnachweis and the institution’s confirmation of your attendance.
Please note: Your internship institution does not have to confirm your report! The IBI does not require a job reference for the quality of your work. However, you are free to request a reference, should you need it for further career purposes.

Please note: You also have to hand in a certificate from your employer, that indicates the internship period and the hours absolved.
